Getting Around French Polynesia

Traveling between French Polynesia’s major islands is convenient and affordable, while travel to the remote islands can be a little more challenging.

Air Tahiti offers regular flights to 46 islands of French Polynesia, with frequent daily service to the most popular islands. There are daily flights to Bora Bora from to Tahiti, Moorea, Huahine, and Raiatea. There are usually one or two daily 45-minutes flight from Moorea to Bora Bora, and 20-minutes daily flights from Raiatea and Huahine.

Air Tahiti also has multiple weekly flights between Tahiti, Maupiti, Rangiroa, Fakarava, Manihi, and Tikehau. Air Moorea also offers flights every 30-60 minutes from Tahiti to Moorea. Papeete is the major transport hub for flights within French Polynesia, so regardless of your destination; you’ll almost always need to pass through Tahiti.

Flights are generally the easiest way to travel between the islands, but travel by boat is also possible. Moorea and Huahine can be reached by ferry or catamaran from Tahiti, with weekly service to Huahine and daily service between Tahiti and Moorea. The company Aremiti offers high-speed catamaran service across the spectacular route between Tahiti and Moorea. Ferries to Moorea leave from Papeete’s ferry terminal located just 15 minutes drive from Faa’a International Airport (PPT), and arrive at Vaiare, Moorea’s ferry dock. Aremiti has two high-speed catamarans: Aremiti 5 and Aremiti Ferry 2; Aremiti 5 is the fastest, covering the 17km between Papeete and Moorea in just 30 minutes, while Aremiti Ferry 2 takes around 40 minutes to travel between the islands. Other options include Moorea Express, which run ferries between Tahiti, Vaiare, and Moorea, as well as a ferry 3 times a week to Maupiti.

The company Vaeanu, offers a Papeete-Huahine-Raiatea-Tahaa-Bora-Bora return service on a cargo ship with passenger cabins, which sets out to Bora Bora every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Keep in mind this is not the most reliable, fastest or confortable way to travel around French Polynesia.

There are a few additional inter-island ferry services available, but they are too irregular to be a practical option for most travelers.

TRAVEL TIP - If you plan to visit Bora Bora and Moorea, catch the high-speed ferry from Tahiti to Moorea, which only takes 30 minutes, spend few days in Moorea and then fly to Bora Bora. The ferry is a great alternative to enjoy the scenic views from Tahiti to Moorea.
